Kedarnath — The Sacred Jyotirlinga

Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is among the holiest pilgrimage destinations in Hinduism and the most challenging of the four Char Dham shrines. Situated at a staggering altitude of 3,583 metres (11,755 feet) in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, the ancient Kedarnath Temple stands in a dramatic Himalayan amphitheatre surrounded by snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and the sacred Mandakini River. The temple, believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, has survived avalanches, earthquakes, and the devastating 2013 Uttarakhand floods. Remarkably, a massive boulder diverted the floodwaters around the temple, leaving it standing while everything around was destroyed. This miracle reinforced devotees’ faith in Lord Kedar’s divine protection.

For devotees across India, the Kedarnath Yatra is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience that tests physical endurance while rewarding the soul with divine darshan. The temple is open only from April/May to November (approximately 6 months) due to extreme winter conditions. In 2026, Kedarnath Temple opened on 22 April and will remain open until approximately November. The Uttarakhand government has implemented a daily limit of approximately 15,000 devotees for safety. At Plan Your Destinations, our Kedarnath tour packages are designed with meticulous attention to physical preparation, acclimatisation, trek logistics, and spiritual fulfilment ensuring devotees from South India and across the country can complete this sacred yatra safely.

Whether you’re planning a dedicated Kedarnath Yatra, a Do Dham (Kedarnath + Badrinath), or the complete Char Dham circuit, Plan Your Destinations has a Kedarnath tour package that’s perfect for you.

Top Destinations in Our Kedarnath Tour Packages

Every Kedarnath tour package from Plan Your Destinations covers the complete pilgrimage journey from the sacred en-route temples to the Himalayan trek and the divine darshan at the Jyotirlinga.

1. Kedarnath Temple — The Jyotirlinga at 3,583 Metres

The Kedarnath Temple is the ultimate destination of the yatra. The ancient stone temple, built in the distinctive North Indian Nagara style, houses the sacred triangular-shaped Jyotirlinga (a naturally formed rock representing Lord Shiva’s hump, as per the legend of the Pandavas). The temple’s grey stone walls have withstood centuries of extreme weather. The massive boulder that saved the temple during the 2013 floods (now called Bhim Shila) sits behind the temple as a testament to divine protection. Inside, the sanctum contains the sacred lingam, and the atmosphere during the morning and evening aarti is deeply moving. The Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, located behind the main temple, is the revered resting place of the great philosopher-saint. Bhairavnath Temple, 500 metres from the main shrine, is the guardian deity temple that must be visited before leaving Kedarnath. Plan Your Destinations arranges darshan, aarti timings, and guided temple visits.

Highlights: Jyotirlinga Darshan, Morning & Evening Aarti, Bhim Shila Boulder, Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, Bhairavnath Temple

2. The Sacred Trek — Gaurikund to Kedarnath

The 18–20 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is itself a profound spiritual experience and a highlight of every Kedarnath tour package. Beginning at Gaurikund (1,982 metres with a sacred hot water kund where Goddess Parvati is believed to have performed penance), the trail ascends through dense forests, crosses the Mandakini River via bridges, passes through the rest stops of Rambara (halfway point with tea stalls), Lincholi, and finally reaches Kedarnath. The last few kilometres offer breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Along the trail, ponies (approximately ₹3,000–5,000 one way), palkis/dolis (₹6,000–15,000), and porters are available for those who cannot walk. Plan Your Destinations arranges all trek support including pony/palki bookings.

Highlights: 18 km Sacred Trail, Gaurikund Hot Springs, Rambara Rest Point, Alpine Meadows, Mandakini River Crossings, Mountain Views

3. Kedarnath Helicopter Darshan

For devotees who prefer not to trek (senior citizens, families with children, or time-constrained pilgrims), helicopter services offer a convenient alternative. Multiple government-approved aviation companies operate from helipads at Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi to the Kedarnath helipad, located approximately 500 metres from the temple. The helicopter flight takes just 8–10 minutes and offers spectacular aerial views of the Himalayan peaks, glaciers, and the Mandakini Valley. Helicopter tickets are in high demand and must be booked well in advance (slots released online). Return helicopter service allows approximately 1.5–2 hours at Kedarnath for darshan. Plan Your Destinations assists with helicopter booking and coordinates ground logistics for helicopter Kedarnath tour packages.

Highlights: 10-Minute Flight, Aerial Himalayan Views, 500 m Walk to Temple, 1.5–2 hr Darshan Time, Phata/Guptkashi/Sirsi Helipads

4. Guptkashi & Triyuginarayan — En-Route Sacred Sites

Guptkashi (1,319 metres), the base camp town for Kedarnath, is itself a sacred destination. The Vishwanath Temple in Guptkashi (a replica of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi) and the Ardhnarishwar Temple (unique half-Shiva, half-Parvati deity) are important pilgrim stops. Triyuginarayan Temple (25 km from Guptkashi) is believed to be the sacred site where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married an eternal flame has reportedly burned here for thousands of years. The village setting amidst terraced farms and Himalayan views is beautiful. Plan Your Destinations includes Guptkashi and offers Triyuginarayan as an optional excursion in Kedarnath tour packages.

Highlights: Guptkashi Vishwanath Temple, Ardhnarishwar Temple, Triyuginarayan Wedding Site, Eternal Flame, Himalayan Village Charm

5. Chorabari Glacier, Gandhi Sarovar & Vasuki Tal

For adventurous devotees with good fitness, the area around Kedarnath offers remarkable high-altitude experiences. Chorabari Glacier (also called Gandhi Sarovar), approximately 3 km from Kedarnath Temple at 3,900 metres, is a glacial lake where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were ceremonially immersed. The trek offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Vasuki Tal (4,135 metres), an 8 km trek from Kedarnath through challenging terrain, is a pristine glacial lake surrounded by mountains, considered extremely sacred. These treks are recommended only for fit trekkers and require a full extra day. Plan Your Destinations can add these excursions to extended Kedarnath tour packages.

Highlights: Chorabari Glacier Trek, Gandhi Sarovar Lake, Vasuki Tal 4,135 m, Glacial Views, High-Altitude Trekking, Sacred Waters

6. Haridwar, Rishikesh & the Journey Route

Every Kedarnath tour package begins with the sacred journey through Uttarakhand’s holiest cities. Haridwar (Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti one of India’s most spectacular evening ceremonies) and Rishikesh (Yoga Capital of the World, Lakshman Jhula, Ram Jhula, and riverside ashrams) are the traditional starting points. The scenic road from Rishikesh to Guptkashi (220 km, 8–9 hours) passes through Devprayag (the sacred confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers forming the Ganges), Rudraprayag (Alaknanda and Mandakini confluence), and the spectacular Garhwal Himalayan landscapes. Plan Your Destinations includes Haridwar and Rishikesh sightseeing in all Kedarnath tour packages.
