Leh Ladakh — The Land of High Passes

Ladakh, the crown jewel of India’s Himalayan landscape, is one of the most breathtaking and otherworldly destinations on Earth. Situated at an average altitude of 3,500 metres (11,500 feet) in the northernmost tip of India, Ladakh meaning “Land of High Passes” is a high-altitude cold desert where barren moonscape mountains meet turquoise lakes, ancient Buddhist monasteries perch on dramatic clifftops, and some of the world’s highest motorable roads wind through impossibly beautiful terrain. Once part of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh became a separate Union Territory of India in 2019.

For Indian travellers, Ladakh is the ultimate domestic adventure destination no passport or visa needed, just an Inner Line Permit (easily arranged) for certain areas. Flights from Delhi to Leh take just 1.5 hours, offering dramatic Himalayan views. The road journey via Manali (475 km) or Srinagar (434 km) is itself one of India’s greatest road trips. At Plan Your Destinations, our Leh Ladakh tour packages are designed with careful attention to acclimatisation schedules, altitude safety, comfortable accommodations, and maximising every moment in this extraordinary landscape.

Whether you’re planning a road trip adventure, a spiritual monastery tour, a honeymoon, a photography expedition, or a bike trip of a lifetime, Plan Your Destinations has a Leh Ladakh tour package that’s perfect for you.

1. Leh Town — The Gateway to Ladakh

Leh, the capital of Ladakh at 3,524 metres, is a charming town nestled in the Indus Valley surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks. The nine-storey Leh Palace (modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa) towers over the old town. Shanti Stupa, a white-domed Buddhist peace stupa built by Japanese monks, offers panoramic sunset views over the entire valley. The Main Bazaar is a vibrant street lined with shops selling Tibetan handicrafts, pashmina shawls, and turquoise jewellery. Leh is also your acclimatisation base the first day must be spent resting to adapt to the altitude. Plan Your Destinations includes Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, Hall of Fame (Indian Army museum), and Main Bazaar in all packages.

Highlights: Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa Sunset, Hall of Fame, Main Bazaar, Acclimatisation Day, Old Town Walk

2. Pangong Tso — The Iconic Blue Lake

Pangong Tso is Ladakh’s most iconic destination and arguably India’s most photographed lake. Stretching 134 km from India deep into Tibet (China), this endorheic lake sits at 4,350 metres and is renowned for its mesmerising colour changes from azure to turquoise to sapphire blue to emerald green depending on sunlight and season. The lake gained massive popularity as the filming location for the climax of 3 Idiots. Overnight camping beside Pangong under a sky blazing with millions of stars is one of India’s most unforgettable experiences. Plan Your Destinations arranges lakeside camping or cottage stays, with the drive via Chang La pass (5,360 metres).

Highlights: Colour-Changing Lake, 3 Idiots Location, Lakeside Camping, Stargazing, Chang La Pass, Sunrise Views

3. Nubra Valley — The Valley of Flowers

Nubra Valley, reached via the legendary Khardung La pass (5,359 metres one of the world’s highest motorable roads), is a surreal cold desert valley known for its sand dunes, Bactrian double-humped camels, ancient monasteries, and the remote village of Turtuk India’s last village before the Line of Control with Pakistan, which was captured in the 1971 war. Ride a Bactrian camel across the hunder sand dunes, visit the magnificent Diskit Monastery (with its 32-metre Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the Shyok Valley), and explore Turtuk’s Balti culture and apricot orchards. Plan Your Destinations includes Nubra Valley in all extended packages.

Highlights: Khardung La Pass, Bactrian Camel Ride, Diskit Monastery, Hunder Sand Dunes, Turtuk Village, Apricot Orchards

4. Monasteries — Hemis, Thiksey & Lamayuru

Ladakh’s ancient Buddhist monasteries are among its most profound attractions. Hemis Monastery (the largest and wealthiest in Ladakh, famous for its annual Hemis Festival with masked dances), Thiksey Monastery (a stunning 12-storey complex resembling the Potala Palace, with a 15-metre seated Maitreya Buddha), and Lamayuru Monastery (one of the oldest in Ladakh, set against a dramatic moonland landscape) are must-visits. Other notable monasteries include Diskit, Alchi (with 1,000-year-old wall paintings), and Spituk. Plan Your Destinations includes monastery visits with knowledgeable local guides.

Highlights: Hemis Monastery & Festival, Thiksey’s Maitreya Buddha, Lamayuru Moonland, Alchi Ancient Murals, Morning Prayers

5. Magnetic Hill, Sangam & Leh Surrounds

The area around Leh offers fascinating natural phenomena and cultural stops. Magnetic Hill is an optical illusion where vehicles appear to roll uphill on a downhill slope. The Sangam (Zanskar-Indus Confluence) is a breathtaking spot where the turquoise Zanskar River meets the muddy Indus, creating a striking two-toned waterway. Pathar Sahib Gurudwara (a Sikh shrine along the Leh–Srinagar highway) and the Indus Valley views complete the experience. Plan Your Destinations includes all Leh surrounds sightseeing.

Highlights: Magnetic Hill, Zanskar-Indus Sangam, Pathar Sahib Gurudwara, Indus Valley Panoramas, Photo Stops

6. Tso Moriri, Hanle & Offbeat Ladakh

For travellers seeking untouched Ladakh beyond the tourist trail: Tso Moriri is a pristine high-altitude lake (4,522 metres) surrounded by snow-capped peaks, far quieter and more remote than Pangong. Hanle, near the Chinese border, is home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory (one of the world’s highest) and offers some of the best stargazing on the planet. Umlingla Pass (5,883 metres India’s highest motorable road) and the Changthang Plateau (home to Changpa nomads and pashmina goats) are for the truly adventurous. Plan Your Destinations can design extended 10–12 day itineraries that include these remote gems.
