The Char Dham Yatra — India’s Holiest Pilgrimage

The Char Dham Yatra is Hinduism’s most sacred pilgrimage circuit, a transformative spiritual journey through four ancient Himalayan shrines in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century to revive the Hindu faith, the Char Dham circuit follows a traditional west-to-east sequence through some of the most spectacular mountain terrain on Earth. Completing the Char Dham Yatra is believed to cleanse all sins accumulated across lifetimes and ensure moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). Every year, lakhs of devotees from across India and the world undertake this sacred journey, and in 2026, over 5.18 lakh pilgrims registered within just one week of the registration portal opening on 6 March 2026.

The four sacred Dhams each represent a unique spiritual dimension: Yamunotri (3,293 metres) is the source of the River Yamuna, symbolising purity and the beginning of spiritual life. Gangotri (3,100 metres) is the origin of the River Ganga, the holiest river in Hinduism. Kedarnath (3,583 metres) houses one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, representing the power of destruction and transformation. Badrinath (3,133 metres) is the abode of Lord Vishnu (Badri Vishal), representing preservation and divine grace. Together, these four shrines encompass the complete Hindu spiritual universe — Shakti (the sacred rivers), Shiva (destruction), and Vishnu (preservation).

Whether you’re planning a trek-based Char Dham Yatra, a helicopter circuit, or a senior-friendly comfort package, Plan Your Destinations has a Char Dham Yatra package that’s perfect for you.

The Four Sacred Dhams in Our Char Dham Yatra Packages

Every Char Dham Yatra package from Plan Your Destinations covers all four sacred shrines in the traditional west-to-east sequence, along with en-route sacred sites and the gateway cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh.

1. Yamunotri — Source of the Yamuna

Yamunotri, the first dham in the Char Dham Yatra sequence, is the sacred source of the River Yamuna and the seat of Goddess Yamuna. The temple, located at 3,293 metres near the Champasar Glacier, is accessed via a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti (or by pony/palki for those unable to walk). The trek passes through dense forests and alpine meadows along the Yamuna gorge. At the temple, devotees cook rice and potatoes in the Surya Kund (a hot water spring near the temple with boiling water) and offer it as prasadam. The Divya Shila (a rock pillar of pink marble) is worshipped before entering the temple. The 2026 season: Yamunotri opened on 19 April and will close approximately 11 November. Plan Your Destinations includes Yamunotri trek with pony/palki support in all Char Dham Yatra packages.

Highlights: Yamuna Source, Goddess Yamuna Temple, Surya Kund (Hot Spring), Divya Shila, 6 km Trek, Janki Chatti Base, Champasar Glacier Views.

2. Gangotri — Origin of the Ganges

Gangotri, the second dham, is the spiritual origin of the River Ganga and one of Hinduism’s holiest sites. The temple at 3,100 metres, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, marks the spot where King Bhagirath is believed to have meditated to bring the Ganges down from heaven. Unlike Yamunotri, Gangotri is fully accessible by road no trekking required. The actual glacial source of the Ganges, Gaumukh (the “Cow’s Mouth”), is an 18 km trek from Gangotri for adventurous devotees (requires a forest department permit). The submerged Shivling (a natural rock formation visible in winter when water levels drop) is considered supremely sacred. En route to Gangotri, Uttarkashi (housing the ancient Kashi Vishwanath Temple) is an important stop. The 2026 season: Gangotri opened 19 April, closing approximately 10 November. Plan Your Destinations includes Gangotri darshan and Uttarkashi stops in all Char Dham Yatra packages.

Highlights: Ganges Origin, Goddess Ganga Temple, Gaumukh Glacier (optional trek), Submerged Shivling, Road-Accessible, Uttarkashi En Route

3. Kedarnath — Lord Shiva’s Jyotirlinga

Kedarnath, the third dham and the most challenging shrine in the Char Dham Yatra, is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The ancient stone temple at 3,583 metres stands in a dramatic Himalayan amphitheatre surrounded by snow peaks and glaciers. It is reached via an 18–20 km trek from Gaurikund (6–8 hours) or a 10-minute helicopter ride from Phata/Guptkashi/Sirsi helipad. The temple houses a naturally formed triangular lingam representing Lord Shiva’s hump (as per the Pandava legend). The 2013 flood miracle, where a massive boulder (Bhim Shila) diverted floodwaters around the temple, has deepened devotees’ faith worldwide. The Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi behind the temple and Bhairavnath Temple (guardian deity) are essential visits. The 2026 season: Kedarnath opened 22 April, closing approximately 11 November, with a daily limit of ~15,000 devotees and a new rule banning mobile phones in the temple courtyard. Plan Your Destinations arranges all Kedarnath trek/helicopter logistics for every Char Dham Yatra package.

Highlights: Jyotirlinga Darshan, 18 km Trek or Helicopter, Bhim Shila 2013 Miracle, Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi, Bhairavnath Temple, Aarti at 3,583 m

4. Badrinath — Lord Vishnu’s Abode

Badrinath, the fourth and final dham, is the most accessible shrine in the Char Dham circuit and one of the most important Vaishnavite temples in India. Fully road-accessible with no trekking required, the colourful temple at 3,133 metres is situated between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges on the banks of the Alaknanda River. The presiding deity is Lord Badri Vishal (a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in meditative posture, said to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya). The Tapt Kund (natural hot spring at the temple entrance, believed to cure ailments), Brahma Kapal (sacred platform for performing shraddh ceremonies for deceased ancestors), and the Maha Abhishek morning aarti are central to the Badrinath pilgrimage. Mana Village (3 km away India’s last inhabited village before Tibet, with Vyasa Gufa where the Mahabharata was written, Ganesh Gufa, and Bhim Pul) is an essential extension. The 2026 season: Badrinath opened 23–24 April, closing approximately 13 November. Plan Your Destinations includes a comprehensive Badrinath darshan and Mana Village in every Char Dham Yatra package.

Badri Vishal Darshan, Tapt Kund, Brahma Kapal Shraddh, Mana Village, Vyasa Gufa, Road-Accessible, Nar-Narayan Mountain Setting

5. The Sacred Prayags & En-Route Temples

The Char Dham Yatra route itself is a pilgrimage through sacred geography. Five Prayags (confluences) are crossed: Devprayag (where Alaknanda and Bhagirathi merge to form the Ganges  the holiest), Rudraprayag (Alaknanda and Mandakini), Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag, and Vishnuprayag. Each Prayag has a temple and scriptural significance. En-route sacred sites include Guptkashi (Vishwanath Temple), Triyuginarayan (Lord Shiva and Parvati’s wedding site with an eternal flame), Joshimath (winter seat of Badrinath, ancient Narasimha Temple), and Uttarkashi (Kashi Vishwanath Temple). Plan Your Destinations includes stops at key Prayags and en-route temples in our Char Dham Yatra packages.

Highlights: Devprayag (Ganges Birth), Rudraprayag, Five Sacred Confluences, Guptkashi, Triyuginarayan, Joshimath, Uttarkashi

6. Haridwar & Rishikesh — The Sacred Gateway

Every Char Dham Yatra package begins and ends at the sacred twin cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh. Haridwar’s Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti — where thousands of devotees gather each evening to watch flaming lamps set afloat on the Ganges — is the traditional spiritual inauguration of the Char Dham Yatra. Rishikesh offers Lakshman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Triveni Ghat aarti, and the Parmarth Niketan Ashram. Both cities are well-connected by road, rail (Haridwar Junction), and air (Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun — 53 km). Plan Your Destinations includes Haridwar Ganga Aarti and Rishikesh sightseeing as the opening and closing acts of every Char Dham Yatra package.

Highlights: Haridwar Ganga Aarti, Har Ki Pauri, Rishikesh Ashrams, Lakshman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Triveni Ghat, Yoga Capital
